So here it is.. the top and back are ready.. still waiting for a name!
I’ve also still been hard at work making pebbles. As you can see I still need a lot of practice!!I’m trying to make sure the pebbles aren’t all the same size but some are coming out oval instead of round.. Oh well.. maybe I did that on purpose? HAH!
Yesterday was full of cooking instead of quilting. I made three gallons of spaghetti sauce and four gallons of Chili. I freeze it in one gallon increments so it’s ready for the days I don’t want to or can’t cook. I should have made more spaghetti sauce but didn’t have enough italian sausage.
My grand dog made it through his neutering and it has been close to impossible to keep him calm since coming home. He wants to play! It makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it! One more day in the life.. My zucchini is blooming and so are the green beans.. I’m eating strawberries as fast as they ripen and snack on radishes as I weed the rows. The yard cats have killed two of my tomato plants or at least I think it’s them.. I’ll set a trap to find out tonight! They broke the top of the plants off! I may have to look into putting naphtha out there but I’d rather not .(It stinks!)
Hoping this finds you getting through your days with pockets of joy found in places that surprise you!
I’m putting the last border on the New Grand Puppy quilt. #1 picks her up Sunday so I have to wait until then to embroider the name. But it’s a two-day drive home so it will be ready before she gets here! I got a couple more throat widths done on the Bubble Quilt. First the background then the metallic thread. I am so happy I got the tension problem fixed! Quilting life is good here again!
Today is already stacking up to be one of those days! I took my other grand dog to get neutered this morning. It has my stomach so upset! I can’t pick him up until 3 pm. So today I’ll worry all day! Meanwhile I will quilt.. it is the only relaxing thing I can think of!
Also I spent some time with my Mom this morning.. it’s hard. Everytime I think it’s going to get better she slides back three steps. Everything that happens seems to be a personal attack on her worth as a person. I’m frustrated trying to convince her that not only is she loved but she is lovable.
Taking it one stitch at a time today.. hope your day is un-eventful!

I’m not sure how I’d be able to do all these pebbles without the micro handles DH made for me.
These are the ones you can order from Tin Lizzie.. I’m sure I told y’all about my hands..
I can rest my palm on the ball and I don’t get the cramping that a handle sends me to. With all these pebbles I’m grateful I have my handles instead of theirs!
I’m having fun.. I still have a bunch to learn (or re-learn). I forget more than I remember but I am loving the process!
Another 6 am wake up.. I’m gonna be (more ) silly stoopid if this keeps up! I told you about my grand dog (the one with Addison’s.) She’s staying here for the next few weeks BUT she thinks it’s time to get up when she hears any noise! I have five (yes, real-life) dogs sleeping in my bed and it is a very delicate balance to keep them all sleeping.
I’m heading back to the quilt room to play with thread. I finally got the pebbles down but they are time-consuming. I think it’s worth it though.. I love the look of them! I still have to figure out the metallic bubbles, I may spend some time looking at bubbles today!
It’s getting a bit frustrating trying to figure out what I need to do to get this concept into the thread. But then I saw this (the pink bubbles) and I SEE! Do you see what I see? I can do this!
Oh, the needle changes have become second nature now.. although I did have to put nail polish on them to color code them.. I kept forgetting which was which. I won’t tell you how many times I put the same needle back on that I took off!
Well I’m missing yet another quilt show this weekend but it can’t be helped. I looked into going to the Paducah Show but finding a hotel room this late was impossible. I guess it ‘s not going to be my year for quilt shows. No worries, I’ll use my free time to make more quilts!
So much has happened in the last month.. yet it wasn’t the same without sharing it!
I’ve spent lots of time with my mother. #3 Son has done his timed trials to enter the Navy and has actually surprised us all at his ease to hit the numbers! #1 Son has spent months away working in Wisconsin. My #2 Granddog died suddenly and the took so much out of the holidays for #1 Son. She was his alter ego .. his shadow and is still missed terribly.
#2 Son came to visit for a few days and helped Dad ready the garage for painting Bess’s truck.
I didn’t get much sewing or quilting done. I did however finally get that diamond quilt onto the quilting table. BUT..( it’s there always a but?) My Lizzie malfunctioned and I had to tear into her and figure out the mess. I think I may have got her fixed I just haven’t had the time to get back to her.
I made my brother and SIL custom aprons for their restaurant and they actually liked them! I may end up making them some shirts next. Or I should say embroidery their Logo onto shirts..
I got my garden in (finally) and it is big! I’ve got the first bunch of veggies in and about 50 stawberry plants too!
Well, I guess that’s it in a nutshell.. I’ll get into the details later but rest assured I won’t stay gone for very long anymore! Hugs!
I finished quilting the wedding quilt and it is off the table! Two more sides to attach the binding and it’s time to sit and sew! Oh yea! It’s really happening! Can you tell I’m excited? Oh yeah, look at my shirt!! DD got them all rinsed and washed!
While I attach the binding I’m thinking about the next quilt.. you know, the photo memory quilt. I’ve just about got all the details worked out. I had to get more fabric to print the pictures on. But I think the design will work out well. I always did crazy quilt style with loads of embroidery but I think I may do a pieced traditional for this one.
Well it’s been almost three months since chaos broke loose around here and other than completing one pink and brown quilt for a dear friend I haven’t spent much time around fabric. In fact my quilt room is seriously trashed! #3 Son has been doing his college work in here and I can admit that his mess is nothing compared to mine! Oh my word! How did I let it get this nasty in here? Should I stop to straighten up? Naw… that can wait, I don’t know how long I’ll be able to sew. And I sure don’t want to waste any precious time cleaning!
As soon as I get the binding ready I’ll start pulling fabrics for the memory quilt. I’m still going over it in my head and really need to get some graph paper out and doodle some more. If only I could figure out how to use Electric Quilt! But since these are all different size blocks it’s too much to try to learn now.

- “Ugly Quilt”
Some quilts are just ugly. No matter how well they are made they just end up ugly. Some start with ugly fabric and end up pretty. And the weird part is that it is the ugly fabric that makes the quilt work.
When I was making the disappearing nine patch quilt above .. it was plain hideous. But wait I planned it that way! I wanted it to be ugly so I could finally keep one of my own quilts. Surely no one would want this as ugly as it is. Then as I put all those ugly fabrics together.. they worked! What are the odds? Over a hundred seriously ugly fabrics and poof! It works? (I know you’re clicking on the close-up to that quilt now.. see they’re ugly...)
Well I’ve also made quilts that I planned on being pretty and they turned out.. not so pretty. Not quite hideous but close enough that I didn’t spend the time to quilt them. I bring them out now and then to see if maybe they lost some of the ugly while in storage.. or maybe some thread painting will fix them? Nothing has come to mind yet so they’re packed up so I don’t see them.
But with each quilt I start those quilts come to mind. I usually don’t plan a quilt around a fabric collection. It’s not that I’ve never .. honestly I usually buy fabric on sale, Clearance is my friend.
I’ve been really hooked on cake stacks lately.. they’re like junk food. Most of the work has been done for you.. I don’t have to worry about the fabrics coordinating.. I just sew. But today it is again time to pull out fabric for two quilts and I’m worrying about ugly again. It was years ago that I made those quilts. I hope I’ve learned what it was that didn’t work. On the other hand I hope I’m not playing it too safe either.. because one thing I’ve learned.. sometimes ugly is quite beautiful.

You’ve got to go visit this site… right now! I’ll wait.. okay did you see her kleenex box motifs? Is she the most inspirational person ever or what!?
It was so nice to have a play day. I’ve been working hard to prepare for two upcoming events. I’ll be presenting my qualifications on July 20 at the Northern California Quilting Council’s Meet the Teachers Day, where there will be a room full of guild program chairs, shop owners and others who are looking to hire teachers and presenters. I hope they like me and hire me!
I’ll also be doing a demonstration at International Quilt Festival-Long Beach during the Saturday Night Sampler on July 30. I’m going to be demonstrating “Ordinary Objects, Fabulous Fills”. That is all about looking at ordinary objects in your everyday life, finding designs in them that please you, and making those designs into free motion motifs.
One of the richest sources of fabulous design I’ve found is…Kleenex boxes! Those Kleenex people must have a talented staff of design people to come up with those pretty boxes. Here is just one example of a pretty fill using the Kleenex motif as inspiration.

Today is a nap day…I took off two days in a row and I follow it with a nap day! Well that’s what happens! All that fun is tiring!
Okay I’ll get back on the thread mill of life on monday.. I did check a few things off my list this morning so that’s something. Oh and our church service was great this morning! The kids went with Grand to a water park so I’m off the hook! Good thing since I got a quite enough sun yesterday!
Dinner is in the crock pot and I’m off to bed!

I love rainy days, don’t you? Of course after a day of weeding and mulching I may be just a little relieved to know I won’t be doing more yard work today! But we’re so close to being done… I’d just as soon get-r-done!
Technology is advancing so quickly and things become obsolete sometimes even before they hit the market. Sometimes I worry that technology will slowly change things so much that I won’t recognize them or be able to function because I’m not knowledgeable about it.
I’ve been tempted to add the computer assist to my Tin Lizzie. But somehow that just seems like cheating to me. Don’t get me wrong here. Those of you that can design computer programs to guide the longarm are talented. It’s just that it wouldn’t be my art form. Let’s see if I can say this in a way that doesn’t insult anyone. If the computer guided my Timmy to stitch a programmed design and I just hit the start button in my opinion, that would make me a machine operator not a quilter.
I know I could definitely use a computer to quilt some of my quilts for me, like the quick get-r-done quilts that are for utility. For some reason I still think it’s cheating. Ya know, the more I think about it though it makes me wonder what they thought when quilters started using machines to do the quilting. There are still some amazing hand quilters out there that put the machines to shame. Did they think the same way about longarm quilting machines that I do about computers?
Where is the line drawn? I’m starting to think each new development will become another avenue to develop into an art form. The advances keep coming and the quilts that are coming out of them are nothing short of amazing. So all in all it is a really good thing!
