It seems that much of my life I’ve either been hurrying or waiting. I think one of the rare times I’m not is when I’m creating. I am “in the moment” when I create a quilt or crochet a project. It’s almost a Zen thing when time passes without my noticing it. I look up and it’s four hours later.
These are some of my favorite times. This quiet solitude feeds my soul. My hands and mind are working together and when the zen breaks I’m disoriented for a moment. And it gives me the burst of energy I didn’t even know I needed.
Because of my physical difficulties it’s getting harder and harder to find the zen. Yet I continue to quest for it, if only for a few moments.
So much life has happened, I can’t even wrap my head around it all most days. But I’m returning to my main loves (writing and quilting) with a few others thrown in for good measure.
I’ve missed being here and sharing the threads of my life. Have you noticed after finishing a quilt how many pieces of thread are literally everywhere? For weeks I find pieces in every room of the house and somehow also in the car! I finished working on a memory quilt my daughter and I made together for her in-laws. We used gold embroidery thread. Now that’s a blog unto itself! I’ve got serious opinions about metallic threads now! But before I go off on a tangent.
Long story short.. #1 son and wife now have two sons, #2 son has two daughters, #3 son served five very long years in the Marine Corps and in eight days is going into the Army as a Sargent, and my baby girl met and married the love of her life and three months ago had a son. My Father, Sister in law and Mother died. We sold our home in Florida and moved to the mountains in North Carolina. Of course that leaves a lot out but I’m sure I’ll cover it in time.
Oh yes, there have been quilts and new sewing machines and new old sewing machines. I also learned to crochet. And fell in love with tunisian crochet.
So many threads woven so beautifully into the tapestry that is my life. New threads added and some old ones no longer…

As I head out to celebrate Independence Day with food and fireworks I pause to think (I know, scary, right?).. I am so NOT independent of anything! I find I am more dependent than when I was a dependent!
I depend on..
- First and foremost I depend on God to open my eyes and ears
- help with my basic care
- supply of my basic needs
- technology to get out of the house
I can not imagine having no electricity, gas, and water supplied directly to my home. Or grocery stores stocked with food. Granted, you must have money to pay for these things.. there lies to quandary.
If I had only needle and thread and flour sacks would I still be a quilter? I think so, but I doubt I would have the fortitude that others who came before me had. I can only hope. Today I am grateful to all of those who helped this nation become Independent. It’s a goal I’m shooting for too!
Yep, I think it is past time to go on a stash busting spree. I can’t buy any more fabric because I don’t have room! (yes, it has spread into the bedroom too!) It’s getting embarrassing!
It’s time for some simple quilts, twin to lap size. I mean really simple! I found a simple celtic knot I’m going to try. Fifteen inch blocks and I’ll need a total of twenty. I’d really rather keep it small but I’m in a hurry! Let’s see.. I’ve figured out a real quick strip piecing method so .. I know, I did it again, didn’t I? It just goes against my nature to completely follow a pattern.
So any-hoo… here’s the pattern I’m starting with. As you can see by their instructions there are a ba-zillion pieces per block. But I think it lends itself easily to strip piecing! So I start cutting after the holiday and I’ll let ya know how that goes!

What could be more perfect? A gift basket of all my favorite things! Quilting Magazine, tequila with a new shot glass, chocolate, and a Jo-anns gift card! Turning fifty-one was a lot more fun than fifty! All my kids and my Mom and the best dinner ever.. Yep Kentucky Fried Chicken!
The only drawback to the day was tropical storm Debby. We were right in her path and she was dumping TONS of rain all day long! We got about twenty inches! Fortunately for us we remained high and (almost) dry but I can’t say the same for some of our neighbors. The river crested and flooded neighborhoods and many had to grab their pets and run.
A leaking roof.. that’s the worst we suffered. We were blessed! Not to mention I had enough KFC for breakfast the next morning! I love cold fried chicken!
I’m going back into the Quilt room today.. hoping to get the blocks finished but ya know, I just don’t see finishing today. I’ve got about twenty more blocks to go and I may be having puppies today!
Oh, did you see how I just slipped that in there! Yes, PUPPIES! Well maybe, she has woke me up at the crack of dawn yesterday and today. Now I’m having one of those “what was I thinking” moments! My stomach hurts and I’m a nervous wreck! Just the thought of having puppies in the house again!
You just know she’ll get into my batting scrap pile. Maybe I should use this nervous energy to clean the quilt room? Naw, I’d rather quilt!

Where do I begin? In the middle of course! Y’all already know I’m far from organized! I made it a year in the Post-a-day challenge but couldn’t follow-up the second year.. I guess I get an E for effort?
So here we go…
I have completed a few quilts. Though for the life of me I can’t find the pictures. I finally finished the “Bubbles” Quilt.. I like how it turned out. I really need to do more thread painting to improve my skills though! This is my current project. It’s been slow going but I’m enjoying the process.
We’ve spent a lot of time at my Mom’s house playing and spending “family” time.
There’s been a lot of celebrating. Birthdays, Mothers Day, Graduation of #3 and yes Enlistment into the Marines. (I’m counting down the days until he leaves with a heavy heart.)
We’ve had too many medical scares. Still more that have not been resolved but we also celebrated getting braces off after three long years!
DD and I went to see One Direction. (That’s a boy band for those of y’all without teenage girls in the house.) The Amphitheatre was filled with 20,000 screaming girls! I’m still trying to recoup from that! I’ve got a new grand puppy (yes, again!) Her Name is Sophia. She’s the first for #2 and his GF! I’ve got to get that quilt done in the next two weeks!
Last but of course not least. I finally got my first tattoo! I love it and am already planning my next!
Hoping I can get back to some semblance of routine but I’m not counting on it. Taking it one breath at a time!

(LOC) (Photo credit: The Library of Congress)”]The count down is now 85 days until the Quilt Show! I mean seriously who wouldn’t want to go? I know it’s a lifelong dream of mine to go to Ireland. I don’t have any definitive reason but hey, if there’s a Quilt Show, tell me.. whats a better reason?
Even McCall’s has a quilting Ireland tour! SEE!! It’s not just me. Other people see quilting as a reason to go to Ireland. But wait even Ricky Tims is going to be there.. I’ve always wanted to meet Ricky Tims! I guess that’s another reason to go, right? (Shhhh… these are reasons not excuses! And I’m not done!! ) I’ve gotten all but two of the Irish Quilting Magazine since it’s premiere issue. The quilts are so beautiful. The pictures just send my imagination wild with possibilities!
Unfortunately it’s not in my budget but it doesn’t stop my dreaming about it! It’s a romantic notion and I enjoy looking into it each year.. you know, just in case my Dreamz Happen! So if you go please take pictures and tell Ricky “Hi” for me!
