Everyone thinks about health at one point or another during the day. Usually it’s connected to food or drink. Sometimes it’s exercise. Is it good for you or bad for you?
The word Medicine is defined as: ” the science and art dealing with the maintenance of health and the prevention, alleviation, or cure of disease.” If it is both science and art as Merriam Webster states, where is the line drawn? Science is repeatable art is not.. science is exact, art is not.
In 1961 the average American life expectancy was 70.2 years then in 2006 it was 77.7 according to the CDC. That’s a seven-year difference but How did it happen? Everyone takes credit and skews statistics to say it’s because of this or that. And Is it seriously a better quality seven years?
I would have thought that with the huge decrease of smokers it would have really jumped at some point. From 1961 to 2009 smoking has decreased from 46% to 21%. If second-hand smoke is to blame for there not being a decrease shouldn’t someone figure out why the second-hand smoke today is so deadly compared to earlier years when it wasn’t? I’m thinking additives.. but that’s my opinion.
Between 1900 and 1949 the first few years of life were the most perilous. With the advent of penicillin and understanding sanitary practices these numbers dropped significantly. So how did immunizations get all the credit years later? If immunizations are so blasted wonderful and safe again why no big jump in the statistics?
So who do you listen to, who do you ask? How do you decide what is or isn’t good for you? Is organic really the answer? Is your doctor an artist or a scientist? Do they even know there is a difference? Are vaccines safe? Why are some diseases now so prevalent that weren’t before?
I have tons of questions about health.. quality of life and why people believe things that statistically are not true. Something is happening in everyday lives that is improving the statistics. Some things are happening to hurt quality of life. What are they?
